What should a car salesman use instead of Google Voice?
Short answer
Google Voice is fine for a few personal texts, but its acceptable use policy prohibits large numbers of commercial messages and automated messages, which is exactly what lead follow-up becomes. A car salesman who texts leads every day is better off with a registered business line: a general one like Quo, or one built for car sales like Relay Solo, which adds an AI that replies to leads in your name.
What Google's policy says
The Google Voice acceptable use policy tells users not to send spam, large numbers of commercial messages, or automated messages. It lists sending commercial or promotional messages to a large number of users, sending messages in bulk, and sending messages through an automated process such as a script.
A car salesman texting a few people a week is not what that policy is aimed at. Daily lead follow-up, reminders, and any kind of automated reply are much closer to it.
What to look for instead
- Registered for business texting. US carriers require A2P 10DLC registration for business texts from a 10-digit number.
- A number you own. So it stays with you when you change stores.
- Something that answers when you can't. Leads cool off fast. Plain second lines just wait.
Your realistic choices
- Quo (formerly OpenPhone): a polished general business line from $15 a user a month billed yearly. Good if you just want a clean second number.
- Relay Solo: a business number built for car leads, with an AI that answers your leads and books appointments, from US$49 a month.
- Your store's CRM texting: free to you, but the number and the conversations belong to the store.
Common questions
Will Google Voice get suspended for business texting?
Google can act on accounts that break its acceptable use policy, which prohibits large numbers of commercial messages and automated messages. How it is enforced in any one case is up to Google.
Is Google Voice for Workspace different?
It is a paid business version ($10, $16 or $24 per user a month with Google Workspace, per Google’s pricing page). It is a business phone system, not a lead follow-up tool.
